Step 1:
Place a drain container under the transmission oil pan. Use a 13mm socket wrench to remove the transmission oil drain plug to completely drain the oil, then reinstall the plug.

Step 2:
The transmission oil pan is secured by 20 fasteners. All bolts are identical and require a 10mm socket wrench. Remove 18 of the 20 bolts, leaving one on each of the driver's and passenger's sides (opposite sides). You will need various extension levers and universal joints to access the rear oil pan bolts.

Step 3:
With the oil pan against the transmission, remove the last two bolts, then carefully lower the oil pan. A small amount of automatic transmission fluid will remain in the oil pan; pour it into the drain container.

Step 4:
Gently wiggle the oil pan downwards to remove the transmission oil filter.

Step 5:
The transmission oil filter gasket can easily get stuck in the filter holes. Please check that the gasket/O-ring was removed with the filter. If the gasket/O-ring is stuck in the hole, carefully remove it with a small hook or screwdriver.

Step 6:
Install the new transmission oil pan filter in the reverse order of removal. Lightly apply a layer of new automatic transmission fluid to the gasket to ensure a smooth installation and good seal.

Step 7:
Remove and thoroughly clean the internal magnet located above the transmission oil pan drain plug. Thoroughly clean the inside of the transmission oil pan to remove all residual old fluid.

Note: Excessive clutch material and/or shiny material buildup in the transmission oil pan indicates improper transmission maintenance and/or a potential transmission problem. Large metal shavings or metal debris indicate serious component damage; please have the transmission inspected and checked by a professional.

Step 8:
Reinstall the magnet, clean the gasket mounting surface on the oil pan, and then reinstall the oil pan onto the transmission. The oil pan gasket can be reused after cleaning as long as it shows no signs of cracks or damage. Tighten the 20 oil pan bolts to 11 ft-pound.

Transmission Fluid Top-Up

1. Remove the transmission fluid dipstick and add transmission fluid until the level reaches the cold start fill indicator on the dipstick. If possible, measuring the amount of fluid drained can greatly reduce guesswork regarding the fill level.

2. When the transmission fluid level indicator shows full, start the vehicle and run it for 2-3 minutes. Check the transmission fluid level and add fluid if necessary. Check the transmission pan and the area around the external filter housing for leaks.

3. Drive the truck to allow the engine and transmission to reach full operating temperature, then check the fluid again and add fluid as needed.

Note: If the transmission was improperly maintained previously, we recommend draining the transmission fluid (without removing the oil pan) after a few cycles, and then refilling. While this method does not completely drain the transmission fluid, repeating the drain and refill process will replenish the automatic transmission fluid.
