How do you diagnose a leaking vacuum pump before it ruins your drive belt and leaves you stranded?

What are the early warning signs you guys look for before the vacuum pump seal completely lets go? I’ve heard it can soak the drive belt and lead to a total snap, but how can you tell the difference between a minor "sweat" and a ticking time bomb?

If you’ve dealt with a vacuum pump failure, did you catch it in time or did it leave you stranded? What was your mileage when it happened?

A leaking vacuum pump is a silent killer on the 6.7L Powerstroke. If left unchecked, oil saturation will swell and weaken your serpentine belt, leading to a catastrophic snap that takes out your power steering and cooling.

How do you catch it early? Start by inspecting the bottom of the pump housing and the crank pulley for fresh oil spray. What starts as a minor "sweat" quickly turns into a "ticking time bomb" once oil reaches the belt’s ribs. If you notice a faint burning oil smell or see dampness on the passenger side of the engine front, it’s time to act.
