What are the warning signs before the 2011-2014 turbo self-destructs?

I’ve got a 2013 with 115k miles and I'm starting to hear a faint 'dentist drill' whistle. What should I look for to confirm if my ceramic bearings are going south? I’m terrified of it sending metal into the engine. Should I just bite the bullet and do the 2015+ GT37 turbo retrofit now, or is there a way to save this one?

Before you panic, pop the intake tube off and check the shaft for play. A little side-to-side is normal, but what you really need to watch for is in-and-out (axial) play. If that shaft moves back and forth, those ceramic balls are flat-spotted or worse. Also, look for oil residue in the compressor housing. How many of you have found oil pooling there before the bearings actually seized? If the wheels are already nicked, don't even think about 'saving' it—it’s done.

That 'dentist drill' sound is the classic warning sign of the ceramic bearings disintegrating. To confirm, pull the intake tube and check the compressor wheel for shaft play. A little side-to-side is okay, but if it moves in and out (axial play) or if you see scoring marks on the housing, the turbo is toast. Also, check for exhaust leaks at the manifolds—sometimes a warped manifold or broken bolt can mimic that whistle, but if the pitch changes specifically with boost, it's likely the turbo.
