What causes the "harsh shift" on the 10-speed Allison, and how many fixed it with a TCM relearn versus valve body repair?

The 10-speed Allison (10L100) is a powerhouse, but the "harsh shift" from 3rd to 4th or erratic downshifting has many L5P owners worried. What is the actual root cause-is it just the TCM's adaptive learning struggling with your driving style, or is it a physical defect in the valve body?

How many of you successfully smoothed out your shifts with a simple "TCM Relearn" through a scan tool, and how many were forced into a full dealer teardown? If you’ve experienced these clunky shifts while towing or daily driving, what was the fix that actually lasted?

I tried the relearn three times and it always came back after a week. What was the actual culprit? A sticky solenoid in the valve body. If your 'harsh shift' feels like a literal sledgehammer hitting the floorboard, a relearn won't save you. I had to go through a full dealer teardown under warranty. Don't let them tell you it's 'normal'—if it's consistent, it's mechanical.
