WHAT makes the factory intake pipe burst and HOW do I upgrade to a cold-side pipe kit?

I was pulling my trailer up a steep grade yesterday when I heard a loud "POP" followed by a complete loss of boost and a ton of black smoke. Turns out the plastic cold-side intercooler pipe on my 2022 RAM split right down the middle. Why did RAM use plastic for a high-pressure component? I’m looking at aftermarket aluminum replacements—is this a DIY job I can handle in my driveway, or does it require special tools to get those boots seated properly?

If you're going to do the cold-side pipe, do yourself a favor and get a kit that eliminates the factory throttle valve/grid heater plate bottleneck too. Brands like Banks or Pusher make solid aluminum pipes that won't ever burst. The trick to getting the boots seated properly in your driveway is to clean the mating surfaces with some hairspray or brake cleaner right before you slide the boot on—it acts as a lubricant initially and then becomes a "glue" once it dries. Just make sure you don't over-tighten the T-bolts or you'll crush the pipe, but keep them snug enough to prevent a blow-off at 30+ psi.

"That 'POP' is a classic failure—the factory plastic simply can't handle the heat and boost of heavy towing. Upgrading to aluminum is a straightforward DIY job with basic tools; just ensure the silicone boots are seated clean and dry to prevent them from blowing off.
