Hey everyone. I see a lot of new owners picking up clean LB7s, LLYs, and the holy grail LBZs, asking the same question: "What do I need to do to make this thing last and tow better?"
We aren’t building dyno queens here; we want workhorses. I’ve put together a list of the exact setups I install for customers who want lower EGTs (Exhaust Gas Temperatures), better fuel economy, and a truck that doesn’t leave them stranded. I’m going to break this down by the "pain points" of these engines and use some parts from TruckTok that I’ve had good success with recently regarding fitment and material quality.
I recently installed the TruckTok 2004.5-2005 6.6L GMC Chevrolet Duramax LLY Diesel High Flow Turbo Intake Elbow on a customer's 3500HD. The difference is night and day. This is a CNC machined piece, not cheap plastic. The airflow rate increases by about 80% over stock.
For the LLY (2004.5-2005):You need to get rid of the restriction. I recommend the TruckTok 2004-2005 6.6L Chevy GMC Silverado LLY Duramax Diesel EGR Delete Kit. It replaces the stock components with aluminum and stainless steel piping. It creates a reliable gasket seal that won't crack under thermal cycling.
For the LBZ (2006-2007):The LBZ is a beast, but the EGR is still a weak point. Use the TruckTok 2006-2007 6.6L Chevy Silverado Classic GMC Duramax LBZ Diesel EGR Delete Kit.
I install the TruckTok 2004-2010 6.6L GMC Chevrolet Duramax CCV PCV Reroute Ventilation diesel Kit on almost every truck that comes through the shop.
Downpipe-Back Systems (4" vs. 5"):For a work truck or daily driver, I prefer a 4-inch system. It maintains slightly better low-end torque for towing. The TruckTok 2001-2007 6.6L GM Duramax LB7 LLY LBZ 4" Downpipe Back DPF Delete Pipe is made of T-409 stainless. It deletes the restrictive cat/muffler. No bungs, just flow.
If you want that deep, aggressive jet-engine sound and plan on running high horsepower (over 500hp), go for the TruckTok 2001-2007 6.6L GM Duramax LB7 LLY LBZ 5" Downpipe Back DPF Delete Pipe. Just know it will be louder in the cab while towing.
I use the Trucktok 2006-2010 Chevy Duramax LBZ/LMM 5 Position Switch.
The Hitch:I recommend upgrading to the Trucktok 2" Receiver Heavy Duty Adjustable Drop Trailer Hitch. It’s aluminum (no rust), has a 12,000 lbs GTW rating, and offers a 6-inch drop/rise. The double anti-theft locking pin is a nice touch because these hitches do get stolen.
Recovery Gear:If you go off-road or work on muddy job sites, static straps are dangerous. Get a kinetic rope. The Trucktok 1" x 30ft Heavy Duty Kinetic Recovery Rope Kit has a 35,000 lbs break strength. The "kinetic" part means it stretches to store energy, yanking stuck trucks out without tearing the bumper off. Pair it with their Receiver Shackle Kit for a solid anchor point.
Bed Protection:Finally, keep your gear dry. For the HD trucks (2500/3500), you usually have the 6.5ft standard bed or the 8ft long bed.

Phase 1: The LLY "Hot Engine" Fix (2004.5-2005 Specific)
If you own an LLY, you probably know the struggle. They run hot. The factory turbo inlet is incredibly restrictive—it forces the turbo to work harder, generating excess heat. Before you do anything else, you have to let that turbo breathe.I recently installed the TruckTok 2004.5-2005 6.6L GMC Chevrolet Duramax LLY Diesel High Flow Turbo Intake Elbow on a customer's 3500HD. The difference is night and day. This is a CNC machined piece, not cheap plastic. The airflow rate increases by about 80% over stock.
- Installer Note: When you swap this, you’ll notice an immediate drop in EGTs while towing. It also has a threaded port for the PCV/CCV, which makes the next step easier. Don't skip this mod if you drive an LLY; it's practically mandatory for engine longevity.
Phase 2: EGR & Soot Management (The Lung Transplant)
The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system is the enemy of a clean engine. It pumps hot, soot-filled exhaust back into your intake. Over time, this mixes with oil vapor to create a sludge that clogs your intake bridge and risks cooler failure (which dumps coolant into your cylinders).
- Why do this? Aside from cleaning up the engine bay, you get faster coolant recirculation. This actually lowers engine temps and removes the risk of a stuck valve leaving you in limp mode.
Phase 3: The CCV Reroute (Stop Eating Oil)
Open your hood and look at your intercooler boots. Are they oily? That’s your Closed Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) system pushing oil mist into your turbo. This coats the intercooler, reducing its efficiency, and degrades the silicone boots until they blow off.I install the TruckTok 2004-2010 6.6L GMC Chevrolet Duramax CCV PCV Reroute Ventilation diesel Kit on almost every truck that comes through the shop.
- The Build: This kit uses 6061 aluminum fittings and heavy-duty 5/8" fuel hose rather than cheap heater hose. Heater hose collapses under oil exposure; this stuff doesn't.
- The Result: Your turbo compressor wheel stays clean, and you prevent that "runaway diesel" risk where the engine feeds off its own oil.
Phase 4: Exhaust Flow & The Dreaded Up-Pipe
The Up-Pipe Issue:On the passenger side of the LB7, LLY, and LBZ, the factory up-pipe has a bellows design that is notorious for cracking. When it cracks, you lose drive pressure to the turbo (laggy throttle) and you get exhaust soot all over your firewall/HVAC intake.Replace it with the TruckTok 2001-2016 6.6L Chevrolet Chevy GMC Duramax LB7 LLY LBZ LMM LML Exhaust Up-Pipe (Passenger Side). This one uses a high-performance bellow with laser-cut flanges. It’s 304 stainless steel, so it handles the heat cycles much better than the stock mild steel.Downpipe-Back Systems (4" vs. Phase 5: Tuning (The Brains)
For the LBZ and LMM guys running EFI Live (which is the industry standard), you need a way to switch tunes on the fly.I use the Trucktok 2006-2010 Chevy Duramax LBZ/LMM 5 Position Switch.
- Installation: It’s a clean setup. The wire colors are marked (White = Pin 46, Black = Pin 54). The aluminum knob feels way better than the cheap plastic ones included in some kits. This lets you toggle between "Stock," "Tow," "Street," and "Race" tunes instantly.
Phase 6: Towing & Bed Setup
If you're fixing the engine, you're likely using the truck to work. Don't neglect the hitch setup. The factory hitches on these older trucks can get sloppy.

Bed Protection:Finally, keep your gear dry. For the HD trucks (2500/3500), you usually have the 6.5ft standard bed or the 8ft long bed.
- Standard Bed (6.5ft): I like the Trucktok 2007-2014 Chevy Silverado Sierra 6.5FT 3-Fold Hard Bed Tonneau Cover. Hard fiberglass is more secure than vinyl. If you need full bed access often, the Soft Roll Up Version is cheaper and lighter.
- Long Bed (8ft): Go for the Trucktok 2007-2013 Chevy Silverado Sierra 8FT Soft Roll Up Tonneau Cover Bed.
Final Thoughts & Installation Tips
These mods boost performance, reliability, and functionality—all parts are installer-tested. Key tips:- Start with EGR/DPF delete (or all-in-one kit) for biggest gains.
- Take time installing—avoid rushed mistakes.
- Measure bed length before ordering a cover.
- All "Delete" performance parts are strictly for off-road or race use only. Check your local regulations, legal issues will be borne by oneself
