What causes the 6.4L pistons to crack, and is there any warning?

I'm planning to run a 200HP tune on my stock bottom end. I’ve heard that the factory pistons are prone to cracking due to the bowl design. What are the symptoms of a cracked piston before the engine totally lets go?

Usually, you'll see excessive blow-by from the oil fill cap or a slight haze from the exhaust. How they crack is usually due to the high heat and cylinder pressure from big tunes on the stock fuel system. If you're going to push big power, you really need to look into de-lipped pistons. It’s a ticking time bomb if you keep the EGTs too high for too long.

The scary thing about the 6.4L is that it can run surprisingly well even with a hairline crack in a piston. What you need to watch for is excessive blow-by. Pull your oil fill cap while the engine is idling; if it looks like a steam engine puffing out smoke or if the cap won't stay balanced on the filler neck, you’ve got cylinder pressure escaping into the crankcase. How it starts is usually a slight haze from the exhaust at idle that smells more like raw fuel than usual. If you ignore those signs, you’re looking at a full engine runaway or a melted block.
