EGR soot buildup: Do you actually NEED to clean the cooler, or is it a waste of time?

I’m at 150k miles on my '14 and I’m terrified of what the inside of my EGR cooler looks like. I’ve heard horror stories of them clogging up and leaking coolant into the engine. Has anyone actually pulled theirs off to clean it? Is it a DIY job or should I let a shop handle the specialized cleaning?

It’s the nature of diesel. If you’re worried, just open it up on the highway and keep EGTs high—it helps burn some of that stuff off.
