Security Gateway Modules: Why can't I just plug in my own scanner?

Tried to run some diagnostic tests on my 2022 and found out I need a "bypass cable" to talk to the ECM. This SGW is driving me nuts. Does everyone have one of these cables in their glovebox, or is there a better way to do basic logging?
