WHAT happens if the CP4 fails, and HOW do I know if I should switch to CP3 now?

I just hit 100k miles on my 2015 RAM 2500. I’m hearing horror stories about the CP4 pump failing and sending metal shards through the entire fuel system ($10k+ repair). Is it better to spend the $2k now on a CP3 Conversion Kit, or just run a disaster prevention kit and hope for the best? Who has high mileage on their original CP4 without issues?

You're at the exact mileage where the CP4 gamble gets real. WHAT happens is simple: the lifter bucket rotates, it starts grinding the cam, and it turns into a 'glitter factory' sending metal into your rails and all 6 injectors.

HOW I justified the CP3 swap: For $2k, you get a pump that lasted a decade in the 5.9L and early 6.7L. A 'disaster prevention kit' only saves your injectors, it doesn't save you from being stranded on the side of the road with a dead truck. At 100k miles, your CP4 has done its job—don't push your luck.

I was in the same boat at 100k. what made me pull the trigger was thinking about how I use the truck. I tow a 15k lb fifth-wheel across state lines.
Being stranded in the middle of a trip with a $12k repair bill and a family in the truck is what I wanted to avoid. I did the CP3 conversion last month. The peace of mind alone is worth it. If you’re just a grocery getter, wait. If you work the truck, swap it.
